Celebrate Christmas in New York
New York is one of the most iconic cities in the world. With over 8 million people it is the busiest city in North America! The Big Apple is synonymous with Christmas and the Holiday season thanks to countless movies and songs. Thankfully the city really lives up to the Hollywood vision and is well worth a visit in December. There’s all manner of great places to stay in the City too. From famous hotels you’ve seen in films, to great apartments in New York that really add to the cosy Christmas atmosphere.
Here’s a few things we recommend you do on any visit to New York, especially during Christmas.
Ice Skating at the Rockefeller Center
Seen in almost every Christmas movie based in New York. The massive Christmas tree and ice skating rink are a must in December. Expect queues for the rink but as it’s so huge there’s plenty of space for everybody. The Rockefeller Plaza is between West 48th Street and West 51st Street, 5th and 6th Avenues in Manhattan. You can also visit the observation level of the Rockefeller Center while you’re there. See rockefellercenter.com for more details.
Probably the most iconic area of New York. Times Square is a dazzling display of lights, advertising banners, video screens and traffic. It’s a great place to hang out and people watch with loads of restaurants and bars. They’re usually quite expensive on the strip itself but you can save money in the side street cafes. A visit at night-time is a must for the full awesome power of all those twinkling lights.
It’s also the epicentre of America’s New Years Eve celebrations. Televised to over 1 billion people worldwide and with hundreds of thousands of party goers descending on Times Square, there really is no place quite like it. Be sure to prepare for the evening if you are going. Public transport can be very busy! Visit timessquarenyc.org/new-years-eve
Probably the most famous park in the world and the definitely most popular in the United States. It’s a great place to visit in the day time, even in winter where, depending on the weather, the landscape can change and the snow-covered park looks amazing with the backdrop of skyscrapers. You could spend a while here as Central Park is bigger than Vatican City! Visit centralparknyc.org
